Advancing Georgia’s Immigrant Rights Movement: Unleashing the Power of Storytelling and Transformative Leadership
Overview
Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Atlanta is the first nonprofit legal advocacy organization dedicated to protecting the civil rights of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander (AANHPI) and Arab, Middle Eastern, Muslim, and South Asian (AMEMSA) communities in Georgia and the Southeast.
reimagine collective worked with Advancing Justice-Atlanta to facilitate a leadership experience offering local nonprofit leaders a boost to be stronger, more strategic, and more impactful leaders through storytelling and transformative leadership in Georgia.
The goal is to support a cadre of nonprofit leaders in creating an ecosystem of narrative power, strengthening the community’s connection, fostering deeper engagement with partners on the ground, and telling their stories for social change.
Our Approach
reimagine collective developed a six-month fellowship that included two in-person convenings, monthly online learning sessions and peer coaching. Fellows gained new skills in building narrative power and community power through storytelling, values based messaging and leadership coaching.
Trainings included:
Telling your story for change
Using narratives or organizing and power building
Content is Queen: How to get your message across and influence change
How to work with organizational stakeholders
Learn about different roles in movement building
Learn how narratives influence our movement and practice how we can use larger narratives to inspire collective action and build consensus and power toward social change.
Know Thyself: Using your ILS to Influence and Motivate
Learn to craft a message using VPSA (Values, Problem, Solution, and Action) that is compelling and will increase engagement or action from your target audiences.
Impact
Through the Leadership Lab, Georgia’s movement leaders accelerated their capacities to build influence, develop storytelling skills for advocacy, and wield power to advance narrative power. All fellows developed their personal stories using Marshall Ganz’s framework of the story of self, us and now.
25 nonprofit leaders in Georgia have participated in the Georgia Leadership Lab over two cohorts. Fellows have come from across the state of Georgia, including Atlanta, Savannah, Athens, and Dalton.
“The stories told were very powerful and gave me a new purpose, which is to further strengthen and help my community.”
